“IMAGINE THIS IS CHEESE”:
DIGNITY AS RESISTANCE IN RESPONSE TO VIOLENCE
Dignity is central to individual and collective well-being. Every day social interaction is organized largely around the according and preserving of dignity. Even small affronts to dignity can be met with intense responses. Violence is an affront to dignity; a humiliation of the person and their loved ones and a threat to the community in which they belong. Many people will say that humiliation is the most lasting injury: “The bruises heal but you never forget what he said to you”. Allan will discuss how adults and children work to preserve their own and others’ dignity in response to violence. He will suggest that honouring the everyday resistance of victims/survivors, adults and children, is an important means of upholding dignity.
Allan Wade Ph.D. lives on the unceded lands of the Quw’utsun Indigenous First Nations, on southern Vancouver Island, Canada. He works as a family therapist, independent scholar, and consultant with a primary interest in promoting socially just responses to violence, broadly defined. For many years Allan has been interested in the question of how adults and children respond to and resist violence and other forms of humiliation.
Allan is best known for his part in developing Response-Based Practice, a method of individual and family therapy and community development, a framework for research and analysis, and a guide for practice across the institutions that respond to violence (i.e., child protection, policing, criminal justice, family law, journalism, research, therapy, and shelter/refuge work). Long-term connection with Swedish colleagues has been instrumental in the development of Response-Based Practice.
Allan provides training and consultation to organizations in Canada and abroad and has published several articles and book chapters on research and practice. With his partner, Cathy, Allan is the father of five and grandfather of 8 wonderful humans. In December, 2024, the Governor General of Canada appointed Allan as a Member of the Order of Canada (C.M.)
